Post Hardcore from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.Band/artist history
Racing Home was founded in the summer of 2002 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The band would see many line-up changes in its short history, but the momentum and passion that Racing Home exudes has remained constant. Original members Phil Brayton (vox/guitar) and Travis Gertz (drums/vox) joined up with Matt Hagarty (guitar/vox) and Shayne Baker (bass/vox) to attack the music world with a barrage of eclectic sounds and a hard hitting live show. From the quick paced melodies to the crushing breakdowns, Racing Home holds nothing back. Improving with every performance, Racing Home continues to impress the critics and fans with their sincerity. Every scream, every strum, every beat comes straight from the heart and it is this passion that sets Racing Home apart from your average band.
“Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking while us four idiots are going crazy on stage, but I can’t seem to stop. The music just pulls it out of me.“ - Matt Hagarty.
This exhaustive energetic live show does not take away from the band's ability to perform tight, solid, and consistent sets. Opening for such diverse bands as Ten Foot Pole, DOA, Choke, and S.T.U.N., Racing Home has the ability to play with any band, to any crowd, and deliver a truly unique show that leaves its mark on the audience's brains. Although three of the members are full-time students, music is priority one. Phil drives two hours to get to practice, but that is the price they are willing to pay to be able to continue making music.
Racing Home has been 100% DIY since its conception. From pressing the CD’s to screening the shirts, Racing Home has learned the true meaning of work ethic. “It has always been important to remain in control. That way we only have ourselves to blame if we miss out,” notes Travis who is in charge of the website and design aspects of Racing Home. He also runs a company out of his garage that specializes in die-cut stickers and custom banners. In fact, every member of Racing Home has been delegated specific tasks. Matt is in charge of booking, Shane handles the promotion, and Phil drinks heavily and writes the songs sometimes simultaneously. Phil has also started an indie record label (Broken Van Records) that will be responsible for releasing Racing Home’s debut full-length, “Finding Comfort in the Familiar” that is due out June, 2004.
“I don’t like the idea of leaving the bands fate up to strangers, so I figure if someone is going to screw this up, it is damn well gonna be me,”
- Phil Brayton
For Racing Home, summer marks the beginning of a new year, and two short years after its creation Racing Home has already surpassed any expectations they had. “I am so excited to be playing with these guys and sleeping on floors, eating shitty food and wondering if Horatio (RH’s beloved van) is going to get us to the next city,” Shayne proudly says. Hundreds of shows, tours, two recordings, a slot on the Volcom stage at the 2003 Vans Warped Tour, and an open road of opportunity that will surely lead the band to bigger and better things.
