Described by The Los Angeles Times as possessing angelic grace and voice, Rachel Gaudry's expressive, melodic songs sew together searching, insightful lyrics and sensuous folk pop melodies. With a varied musical background in jazz, piano and performance, her music displays both a sophistication and down-to-earth quality that resonates emotion.
Band/artist history
Gaudry's musical journey has been an exciting one so far, taking her from Australia to Japan to North America and back again several times. Born on Christmas Day, the youngest of nine children, Gaudry grew up in Canberra Australia. She began piano lessons at the age of six. At eleven, she won a music scholarship to a boarding school in rural New South Wales and immersed herself in musical theatre, choirs, piano exams and singing. Later, after spending a year in France and then travelling around Europe, she returned to Australia to study jazz performance at the Canberra School of Music. After graduating in 1995 she moved to Sydney. Since then Gaudry has focused on her songwriting and performing, developing a loyal fan base in both Australia and North America. Gaudry released her critically-acclaimed debut album 'Leaving Traces' in 2001. Produced by Frank Zappa drummer Chad Wackerman, the album proved to be a confident, sensitively-delivered debut, spinning poetic ballads with quirky choruses (Rolling Stone), taking her on several American tours with subsequent licensing of the album to American label Virt Records. In North America, Gaudry has performed at many quality music venues including the House of Blues, Bitter End, Eddies Attic, The Mint, Knitting Factory and Twiggs amongst many others. Her festival performances in North America have included NXNE in Toronto, CMJ music festival in New York, 2NMC in Nashville. In Australia, Gaudry performs regularly at many of Sydney's top venues and has toured and performed at numerous festivals around the country including Bellingen Blues, Wangaratta Jazz, Manly Jazz, Venus Rising and International Women's Day. Her music is played on radio stations around Australia and is a favourite on the ABC network. She has also performed in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Gaudry's songwriting has been recognised with a Johnny Dennis Music songwriting award, numerous grants from the Australia Arts Council and many honourable mentions in songwriting competitions from MusicOz to UNISONG. Her music has been featured in film (The Perfect Man) and she has performed on TV in both Australia (Star Struck, Mornings with Kerri Ann Kennerley) and North America (Foxtel breakfast show Detroit, Rogers breakfast show Toronto, Nitelife on CMFT-TV Canada). Gaudry wrote most of the songs for her second album during a 4-month stay in Japan. The resulting CD 'Bright Window', produced by songwriter/guitarist Sam Hawksley, was released in 2003 to fine reviews. John Shand of the Sydney Morning Herald wrote: "As attractive as her voice is, it's the flow of Rachel Gaudry's songs that is immediately attractive. There are no visible joins in the construction to distract the listener from the dreamy combinations of words and music... Gaudry's voice is a cool breeze, rising in the country and blowing intimacy and intrigue through the lovingly crafted songs"
