Private Stock

The band critics love to hate and the fans long for playing live! Maximum R&B...The Who style! From Punk-Rockabilly-Mod-to their own sound Welcome to the multiple generations of the band..surviving inter-band brawls, concert stabbing, sibling squabbles and max'ed up Gain knob on amplifiers...This is..PRIVATE STOCK
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Hmm..maybe Edmond or Frederick should be writing this...as far as I know, Edmond, Luis, Paul Yco and Frederick started the band...getting the name from Blondie's Record Label..however the truth is...during that time White Castle Whisky was very popular..and at the bottom side of the label clearly states "Private Stock". A favorite drink of the boys! Started as a Punk Band..played gigs in the underground scene. Mel was invited as a guest guitar player for one of the band's gig at Pasay City Sports. Paul Yco decided to leave the band and Ricky (older brother of Edmond) were brought in together with Mel and Edmond switched to bass. A veteran of Brave New World Concert Series, opened & closed the (in)famous Katrina's, played at Red Rocks that became Club Dredd. Included in various TRC cassette albums, played at Recto-Cartimar gigs, DZRJ interviews, Release a tape form album Hype's Cool with the help of Butch (Mel's brother) with such rockabilly hits as Rock and Roll Machines, Have More Fun and the anthemic Future Generation. Edmond left for the U.S to form Nearby Cries...the lads played on for a couple of years and decided to quit to finish college. 1995 saw the resurgence of the 2nd Generation Private Stock with Frederick, Mel, Ricky (from the original) with Roel Innovero (classmate in college) as bass player and Jason Macapagal in drums. Luis during this time was playing with Put3Ska. The 2nd Generation PS played 70's Bistro, Club Dredd and Myrics regularly and was managed by Papa Dom (Dominic Gamboa) of Tropical Depression. The song list is mostly composed of original materials mixed with Mod music. When Roel Innovero migrated in the U.S, Dennis (Mel's younger brother) was called in to play bass. We can call this as the 3rd & Final Generation of Private Stock...besides the legendary clubs that were mentioned..the band played other local clubs/schools that were frequented by foreign nationals. The last generation PS was shortly managed by Ian Carless of MTV Phils. Song writing was again at it's full swing..with original materials mirroring the band's present influences at that time..The Jam, Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Tamla-Motown, original R&B songs. Private Stock did some demo versions of their original songs but was cut short when Frederick decided to migrate to the U.S...then the lads called it quits for the final time. The demo songs are almost raw, with different versions captured in simple tapes and 8 tracks. One 16 track song was done (Kulay)..that enjoyed some airplays at NU107. Unreleased demo version will be available in this site soon. Private Stock had a successful reunion gig last December 29, 2005 at 70's Bistro..and played their last chord.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Yup we did..and we did it well! We are so much better LIVE than recording...as I say..in live gig..you can't replace the smokey bars, beery smells of pubs and the audience reaction!
Your musical influences
Through the evolution of different band members came with a wide variety of influences, from punk, rockabilly, 60's & 70's mod bands, new wave...to Brit Pop..it's evident in the band's musical transition
What equipment do you use?
Hmmm..enumeration time..let's see..Frederick uses any microphone he can get his hand into but has a Yamaha Acoustic guitar, a Epiphone Riviera & a 12 String Rickenbacker; Mel used a beat-up Fender Squire '82 Strat during the early PS years changed to a 70's Yamaha semi-hollow electric guitar (2nd Generation PS) and now a Rickenbacker 330 copy, a Yamaha FG series acoustic guitar; Ricky used to play a Fender Strat copy, Dennis plays a Fernandez Precision bass, a 70's Yamaha semi-acoustic bass, a Rickenbacker 4001 copy and an Ibanez bass he now use for Throw, Luis & Jason plays any drums available to them. Edmond used to play a copy Fender Jazz bass (Sid Vicious style!) For effects..mainly Edmond/Ricky had a Bose Distortion box, Mel did'nt use foot effects during the 1st Generation PS but later used a G7 multi-effects and a volume/wah pedal during the 2nd Generation, now uses Dennis's Turbo Rat effects and borrows Al Dimalanta's Zoom effects occasionally; Dennis uses Sansamp effects. Amplifiers? Wishfull Thinking...
