Prefix 01

Cairns, Australia
November 15, 2005
Prefix is a 4 piece Rock/Metal band aiming at getting signed to a label. If you're a fan of the more technical bands like Metallica, Shadows Fall and Trivium, then you'll love these guys.
Band/artist history
Taken direcetly from www.pre-fix.tk November - December, 2004: Juz was in need of a proper band. Before he tried reading ads in local music stores he came across Andrew, an employee at his local workplace that seemed to be the kind of person who had been in a band before. As it turned out, he was both a guitarist and drummer for nine years and therefore obviously had experience. Juz took note of this and weeks later handed Andrew a demo disc as well as cd containing some jam material. Andrew had extremely similar tastes in music to Juz, which worked out well. January - March, 2005: After a couple months discussion and sharing of ideas for songs to gig with, Andrew brought out his old drum kit that had been locked away at home, and fixed up the skins, ready for jamming. The first session together was late January, where they set up downstairs at Juz's house. Overall the first session went superbly, where they ran over a dozen songs they were each familiar with. The second jam introduced rhythm guitarist Nathan Vong, who was later removed due to the shortage of time at his disposal. The third jam (mid February), introduced the third official member, Colin, a good friend of Andrew, trained in the art of Bass. Luckily, Col was also into the same style of music, easing the pressure on the song selections for what they would gig with. By now, jam sessions were being held regularly once a week to keep things flowing and the band's sound improving. Andrew also took the role of lead singer while they were searching for their fourth member. April - May, 2005 By late May, they had now had about 18 jams together and were in need of not only gigs, but a final fourth member. The expectations of the fourth member were to get a Rhythm guitarist/Lead singer to be their frontman. They also unfortunately missed out on being featured on the 2005 Northern Exposure compilation because they were too late in discovering the studio. The trio had also just written a new song by which they planned on recording to use as a demo for getting a record deal. June, 2005 Around this time the group began some serious recording sessions. Also the release of the System of a Down album "Mezmerize" got the attention of the band and immediately they began nutting out the top tracks. First up on the recording side of things, Andrew brought in a song he'd been working on away from the sessions, "Not like you". This song showed that the band could go heavier and more brutal with other songs soon following. After several weeks of 'once a week' jams another song was developed, "My Reality". This track had been lying around in Juz's pile of recordings for about three years and once the other members heard it, it was instantly rehearsed and reshaped to a more meaningful structure with better riff changes. These sessions resulted in other songs formed by spontaneous bursts of inspiration and the need to go heavier. The best songs were then chosen to be put on the band's five track EP that was to be sent to record labels around Australia to help the band find success. Cover art was developed overnight for the EP so that it could be sold to people in the local area and get their name out. July - October, 2005 A quiet period approached as the band fell apart to undisclosed issues. October came and finally a replacement member was found, Nathan Swaffer, a drummer of 8 years. After 5 minutes of jamming he was recognised as being a flexible player. A couple days later, talking to a good mate, Jarred Fenn, Juz was told of a bass guitarist in Melbourne, looking to move up to their hometown. Without a band, a bass guitarist in Cairns is instantly a target for many groups, so through friendship circles, Kris Leakey entered the band whilst still living in Melbourne. This left only one member to join the band... a rhythm guitarist/lead vocalist. Juz continued working on new material while the band was seperated.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Prefix has not officially performed live yet, however when the EP is completed, they will be sure to hit the local scene in Cairns, QLD, Australia. From there it will be promotion and the possibility of a tour.
Your musical influences
A lot of people have a problem identifying our genre. From the start, Juz has been trying to keep his boundaries strictly within Metal, however with past Punk/Rock influences, it has create an interesting combination of various styles to bring the riffs that are heard today. As a whole, the band has been influenced by Metallica, Pantera, Trivium, Children of Bodom, Slayer, Nirvana, Danzig and ACDC.
What equipment do you use?
Studio-wise, the band's recording equipment consists of a 16 input Behringer Eurorack Mixer, Drum Mics, Vocal Mics and an Apple iBook running Pro Tools. Everything heard in the recordings is done with mics. Guitars are all Epiphones running through a Yamaha DGFX 60 watt Amplifier. Bass is a Fender recorded by plugging directly into the mixer. Drums are a Pearl make.
