Positive Sound Massive
Positive Sound Massive is a collective of singers, vocalists, and players of instruments, who are based in the San Francisco bay area. Active members include: Rocker-T., Jamalski, Sister Sara, Jr. Robby, Wookie J., DJ College, New Dealers, and Stand Out Selector
Positive Sound Massive Recordings is a label dealing with the pure conscious dancehall vibe of reggae music. With a concept formed in the early '90's, in response to the onslaught of slack vocalists, Steffen Franz (Stand Out Selector) put together a solely conscious, global soundsystem. With the aid of DJ Wookie J, they recruited reggae musicians and vocalists, with varied musical backgrounds, from all over the country. They also drew on San Francisco's already
burgeoning new jazz scene for many guest session players.
In true Jamaican style, PSM Recordings was formed, to bring the soundsystems' musical ideas out of the SF scene and into the world reggae market. With the concept of "DJ conscious for conscious DJs," they created double 7" single packs, with dub versions of each on the opposite record's B-side, so that DJs could remix right on the spot. Thus far, they have put out two of these packs. The first, a double single pack by PSM themselves, entitled "Sex & Guns" b/w "Unity" featuring Raskidus & DJ Collage. This release charted in half a dozen American markets, as well as in France, Ireland, and Malta. It continues to receive airplay both nationally and internationally. The second double single pack was a strong release by up & coming San Francisco DJ, Jr. Robby, titled "Boy Want de Gun" b/w "Miracle". Their third single release, by renown "King of Nyahbing", Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus, entitled "No Bow Down" reached
number one in various college markets and charted high on many playlists around the country as well as receiving 'nuff soundsystem and radio airplay in Jamaica.
Positive Sound Massive is more than just an independent record label. It is a soundsystem in the true Jamaican tradition, a band; and for its creators, a way of life. In 1995 and again in 1998, they were nominated for BAMMIEs (Bay Area Music Awards) in the Reggae/Worldbeat Club Band category. So far, they have yet to take home the award, but no matter, they still keep their hope alive while continuing to put out some of the freshest Bay Area sounds.
Over the past few years PSM Recordings has released a handful of CDs and 12"s and has seen greater success with each one. The first CD was a full-length voiced by the Godfather of Dancehall, Nicodemus. The album, titled "Dancehall Giant", was to be the last album recorded before Nicodemus' untimely passing in the summer of 1996. It received international exposure and paved the way for late 1997's "Time's Up". This album was the label's first compilation featuring many unreleased singles and "B sides" and a stable of world-class vocalists. Both the single,"Jah Everlasting" b/w "True Freedom Fighters", featuring Rocker-T and Jamalski, as well as the entire album received airplay in over 30 countries and throughout the United States.
As of February 1st 1999, Positive Sound Massive entered into a manufacture and distribution agreement with San Francisco based Nu-Gruv Alliance. After many years of dealing with independant distribution, with different companies in each market, the growth of PSM Recordings seemed stunted. The current deal allows PSM total creative control while helping to support our ever-expanding release schedule.
PSM had two new releases during 1999, including Rocker-T. "Tru Ganjaman EP", a four song "pro-ganja ep" which was released on July 15th,1999. The EP received great international hype and got radio play from Melborne, Australia to Europe and Japan, as well as in 30 or so Reggae markets through out the US and Canada. Sparking the EP's push was its covers' unexpected appearance in the New Line Cinema feature film "Next Friday". PSM then released Rocker's full length solo album "If Yu Luv Luv, Show Ya Luv", which hit stores October 26th, 1999. The album and EP continue to sell and get a ton of airplay and Internet play. This
summer Rocker performed at many of the US "Reggae Festivals" including the biggest and most prestigious, Reggae on The River 2000 in Northern California.
PSM’s first release in 2000 is "Mi Selecta", the labels’ first producers' special which includes tracks from some world famous producers and beat builders. The album and double vinyl were released on May 16th, 2000 and feature tunes from Mix Master Mike, Dan "Automator" Nakamura, Easy Star All-Stars, Rocker-T., Jamalski, biL featuring DJ Quest, Strong Foundation, Kulcha Shok Muzik, Westside Chemical, Knowstyle Productions, and Jr. Robby. This album has been one of the labels’ greatest success stories as it had pre-shipped over 2500 copies and ranked in Caroline Distributions’ Top Sellers the week it was released.
Over this winter PSM plans on releasing "Riddim Please", the labels’ first full length Dub and Instrumental project. This album will feature dub versions of many of PSMs' favorite tracks remixed fresh for today. In the summer of 2001, PSM will release another artist compilation titled “Western Edition”, as well as the debut album from Sister Sara , and a 4 song EP from Jamalski.
