Polwit Opapant (b. 1971), a native Thai composer, started his first music
lessons at the age of nine by playing French horn with The Prince Royals College concert band (Chiang Mai, Thailand) under the baton of Thienchai Namthep. He, later, switched to saxophone and continued the lessons more seriously with Pinai Preechapon at Montfort College when he was fourteen. He has been a professional jazz saxophonist since his sophomore year at Payap University where he studied music theory with Ayu Namthep, Chan Po, Soros Kuptarat and Sompan Wongdee, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Western Music in 1993.
Opapant advanced his studies of music in 1996 at Middlesex University,
UK, from where he received Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Music (Jazz). During the
Middlesex years, he studied music composition with Robin Stephenson and
Edmund Phillip Parker (a famous British composer and a founder member of
Django Batess Loose Tube jazz group). He also received a Post Graduate
Certificate in Sonic Arts programme at the same university. Opapant has completed his Master of Music in Theory and Composition at the University of Northern Colorado, USA. He studied composition with Evan Copley, Robert Ehle, saxophone with Roger Greenberg, and jazz improvisation
with Kyle Malone. His composition and musicianship as a saxophonist are
recognized by various organizations, among others, International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) and National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)
At the present, Polwit Opapant is an Assistant Dean for Commercial
Music Program and a full time lecturer at Silpakorn University, Bangkok,
Thailand.
Band/artist history
There is no band history, only my history. It is very long and quite boring. So, I don't think that you guys want to know.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, I do play live. Mainly in Bangkok, Thailand. My band, The Jazz Dojo and I just have done a concert at Hua Hin Jazz Festival 2008. The highlight of the all shows were Kenny Garrett newly formed quartet and Mike Stern Quartet featuring Dave Weckl on drums.
Your musical influences
Composers like Beethoven, Hindemith, Berg, Webern etc. always give me a big inspiration. Jazz giants like Coltrane, Davis, Shorter etc. also influence my playing.
What equipment do you use?
I play Selmer MKVI and Julius Keilwerth 'Shadow' tenor saxophone. I also play Selmer SIII soprano saxophone.
I compose music on my MacBook Pro. Yes, I do have a legal copy of 'Encore' music notaion software.
Anything else?
Nah......

Your duet for saxophone and piano is super cool. Also, a nice, laid-back version of "Footprints". Very nice.
Thank you very much Mr,Fanning!
I am so glad that you like my piece. I'll go check out your piece soon!
