Band/artist history
What if you had an emcee that was the derivative of the dislocated and most hated. Who speaks to the miseducated and underestimated. Who rhymes about voluptuous thighs and has A Thug’s Resume. Who revisits and revives the renaissance poetry of Langston Hughes. He would be the ripple in the placid lake of money-driven and substance-compromising rap. Who is the anchor of today’s Hip-Hop news report. He would be, Poepan - the Harlem cat who embraces all aspects of urban America’s music and masterfully blends its mass appeal with its power to elevate and heal.
“What I try to represent is basically humanity. It’s not so much about me being a rap artist, but more of a three-dimensional human being,” Poe lays out his agenda. “I think that Hip Hop is being portrayed too much by one-dimensional characters.” It certainly doesn’t take a detective to trace back the origins of this thought. From the “fuck the police!” and “bitches ain’t shit”-hollering gangsta rapper to the fur-coated, cigar-biting rap pimp, to the new-age thug hammering about his ice and the diameter of his rims, Hip Hop’s storytellers have for the longest produced one-note tales of life in the hood.
“I really don’t know if anyone can actually change the rap game, but what I wanna do is open some minds to other possibilities,” says the happily married father of a fiery-eyed baby boy who seems to have been the first to receive the MC’s energy. A self-described revolutionary lyricist, Poepan - whose name stands for Poetical Pandemonium - unites the rich literary tradition of his hometown Harlem with the native tongue tradition of his stomping ground Long Island, where honing his craft, he freestyled with a slew of Hip-Hop pioneers, among whom EPMD, JVC FORCE, De La Soul, K Solo, Redman, Method Man, and Keith Murray, & Craig Mack, just to name a few.
Even though this may be the first time you are hearing the name, make no mistake, Poepan is far from another new artist with no idea or appreciation for the history of Hip Hop. Poepan was signed to Jazzy J and Afrika Bambaataa’s Strong City label as a solo emcee while in Jr. High School and then as with his partner as a member of The Kemelions (pronounced chameleons) he dropped the EP, ‘Basement Arrangements’ on Zoo Entertainment/ BMG in 1993, which received three mics from The Source. After being discouraged with the direction Hip-Hop has gone since his last outing, Poepan returns on the solo tip once again with a mission to show how it suppose to be done.
“My whole thing is to preserve the art form of what Hip Hop is supposed to be,” says Poe, voicing his disapproval with the current state of mainstream Hip Hop.
The first single “One Of A Kind (message2thesuckaemcee)” b/w “Nikki 20/20’ and “Fillet Of Soul” released on the emcees own The G.A.T.T.A.C.A. Project independent label, offers an advance look into the nephew of a jazz player’s mind, and shows different looks of a lyrically gifted emcee. Whereas it surely would take more than one art-conscious emcee to till the barren land of the 2K+ Hip Hop generation, with lyrics encouraging and empowering the change of heart and outlook, and production by Brand New Heavies track master Jose Lopez and Chris Sibilla, “The Black Experience Vol. 1 (nottheniggerchronicle)” is bound to stir more than a few minds.

I am trying to bring honesty and humanity back to hip-hop. I want to bring back 3-d images instead of the usual one dimensional images at a time when rap seems like it'd being produced on a spam assembly line.
