Free Jazz

2006: The Plaza Noise Ensemble is sax trio (sax, bass and drums). We're very interested in improvisation as well as tightly arranged compositions. For example, we might start a set playing completely free and then go into our arrangement of Glassworks (a piece by Philip Glass). Hunter Long plays saxophones, Jason Smith plays drums and Mike Moellman plays basses.
Band/artist history
2006: We've been playing together roughly two years (since January '04). The three of us shared a common interest in playing free jazz, as well as somewhat obscure (ie: "non-standard") tunes. We've been steadily building our original repertoire since our inception.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
2006: We've been playing quite frequently at the Cup and Saucer. Check out their website: http://www.thecupandsaucer.com
Your musical influences
2006: To name a few: Dave Holland, John Zorn, Wayne Shorter, Stravinsky, Dave Douglas, Mark Dresser, Ives, Albert Ayler, Philip Glass, Jack DeJohnette, world-music etc... as well as some local, "hometown heroes", like Mark Southerland & Bill McKemy.
Anything else?
2006: We'll be at the Cup and Saucer Saturday, January 14th.
