PHONIC

Phonic is an electric quartet of like-minded musicians from the greater Sacramento area who enjoy playing both composed and improvised music in a live setting. Although their music is instrumental, Phonic is well known for never playing a song the same way twice. Sometimes, the jams become very dense and outlandish, other times delicate and euphoric, but always unpredictable. The band is made up of Steve Elliott as lead guitarist and primary composer, Tim Onorato on bass, Mondo Gonzales on drums and various percussion, and Matt Conklin on secondary guitar. Elliott's firm grasp of music theory and tasteful use of guitar effects provide texture and direction to the band, while Onorato and Gonzales lay down the grooves, and Conklin deals out counter-melodies and harmonies galore. Phonic's music can be best described as psychedelic, progressive jazz fusion, but they are certainly not the sort of group to adhere to any one specific genre. Collectively, Phonic's influences are: King Crimson, Phish, Steve Kimock, Grateful Dead, Charlie Hunter, Galactic, MMW, as well as too many more to list. If you like music that makes you move, and have a hankerin' for some heady tunes, be sure to see Phonic in their native environment: live and onstage!
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Yes we play live. All over Sacramento, and beyond. At this point, anywhere we can afford to travel, really. As you might expect, Phonic exists for the sake of playing live, as our music thrives on constant improvisation. There's nothing we'd like to do than tour the country, or even the world by playing the music we love. Currently, you can catch us at staple Sacramento venues such as Old Ironsides, Fox & Goose, Torch Club, & Blue Lamp!
Your musical influences
Grateful Dead, Phish, Critters Buggin, Galactic, Garage A Trois, Steve Kimock Band, The Benevento Russo Duo, Miles Davis, King Crimson, Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Medeski Martin & Wood...the list goes on.
