Phluph
The old saying: "Why do it the hard way if easy will do", is a PHLUPH trademark today. This group now deals in nice and light songs in which melody is the key-word. Apart from a sporadic cover PHLUPH plays it's own songs, with which they hope to reach and please the listeners ears.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
The first step towards nice songs was a kind of crosspollination of firm guitar-rock and dramatic folk. Especially through Arno, who has a background of progressive-rock and hits the drumheads like you wouldn't believe it, melody was made a standard. Sander supplies the songs, which mostly are from his pen, with a voice and guitar-noise. Arne, who by the way sometimes has a good idea too, provides us with a dark bass sound where it's mighty comfortable.

Halfway 2000, because of a gig by ED SEISOPPEN (a well-known POSIES coverband, which is also represented by two of PHLUPH's musical geniouses) they come to the decision that, might it not affect the purity of a trio, a second guitarist in not such a bad idea. Ronald (also playing in ED SEISOPPEN), who originally comes from the in Rotterdam still beloved, however decaded band BONEBAG, joined the affectionate boy group and supplies them with sophisticated melodies and a flawless choreography.
In september 2002 PLUPH was already around for over 5 years. Their exciting history contains, that is for PHLUPH, a couple of highlights. The first one being the release of their first demo "Down, plush"(1997). This demo made it possible to play a whole lot in and out of Holland, including reaching the finals of the "Zuid-Hollandse Popjacht 1998". Also PHLUPH songs were played on the radio, though odd as it may sound, a breakthrough never happened. 1999 was maybe not the most spectacular year but nevertheless, that year the second demo was recorded. "Let's put on a woolly hat and sing another gospel, a 5 song CD that gives a clear vision of what PHLUPH music is about and if we may say so "not bad at all". At this time PHLUPH, enthausiastic as always, plays and kicks ass at several festivals, fancy-fairs, barbeques and children-party's.
2001 is all about building the PHLUPH studio along with an S&M basement. This proces takes, mainly because of the constant lack of sellotape, 3 quarters of a year. Right after finishing the studio preparations are made for recording the 3rd demo. From february 'till august 2002 the demo is being recorded in phases, and look here: "Gunther's Arctic Adventures"is a spontanious, warm and deep CD containing 5 pretty o.k. songs.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
We have, a lot and we liked it. Now, were having a kind of break. Arne is busy with work and taking care of his family (three daughters, a wife, cats, dogs and other animals). Sander is busy with a new job, his health and is working on some new material on his Roland workstation. Arne and Ronald at this moment have no time to sleep, drink or eat because of the fact that daily life is less important then writing and recording new (and old!) songs. Donations in terms of food, drinks, drugs, empty DAT-tapes or money are highly welcome.
Your musical influences
It's hard to mention influences when you have four different people working together. But let's try to mention some artists/bands we like listening to (in no particular order): Posies, Lemonheads, Tragically Hip, Coldplay, Neil Young, Dinosaur Jr., Starsailor, Neil Young, Toad The Wet Sprocket etc.
Anything else?
A life as a rockstar is something that only happens to a few and PHLUPH is very aware of that. Though, if youy have the potency to make a few people on a warm, wet, tuesday afternoon, move to the exquisite psychadelic porn-pop sounds, which are so PHLUPH, then the use of the existance of PHLUP is a fact. Find out for yourselves!
