Pere Flipat
Pere Flipat were a band playing Melodic Rock in the boom period of Catalan Rock (1987- 1993). We sang in English, Catalan & Spanish.
We made an album in 1991 that was moderately succesful, but lack of promotion and direction led to schisms in the band and we split up.
However, we are all still very proud of the music we made back then and that is why we want to make it available to a new generation of "Flippies" - as our fans were known.
Sadly, a reunion of the original band is now impossible because Tony, our Saxophonist, was killed in a car accident a few years back.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Originally formed (in 1987) as a folk trio (Berni, Paco & Pep - various stringed instruments guitars and vocals), the band took off in a more rocky direction with the addition later that year of Pepe (Keyboards) and Ton (Drums) and the later addition of Tony on the tenor sax.
After building up a large loyal local fan base in our home town, the band scored its first success by winning a song-writing competition (Manlleu) - a feat we would repeat a year later.
After local gigs took off, we became a regular feature as a warm up act for any successful act playing in our area. Eventually we were headlining local events ourselves.
The album we made was a compromise. It tried to be a Catalan Rock album - when this had only been part of the "Pere Flipat" story. So the LP didn't really reflect our repertoire. Note that word LP - Yes, it was VINYL - we must have been one of the last bands to release their work on vinyl - but not CD. (CDs were deemed too expensive for our fan base back then! ... if we had but known!)
1992 was our apotheosis and the beginning of the end. After the record company failed to deliver on a promised publicity push, we felt let down by them and by the pressings of the LP, which never sounded as good as the versions we had heard in the studio.
Tensions and musical differences split the group. However, we reformed for a one-off charity gig in 1994 - at which we raised money to build a school in Cameroon.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Not any more... sigh...
