Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Biography
Originally from Lockport, Illinois, a small township southwest of Chicago, Paul Matarelli grew up surrounded by music. Paul's mother taught music in a middle-school while his grandparents both taught organ, piano, and saxaphone lessons out of their home. Paul experimented with many different instruments growing up but never found one for which he had a passion. It wasn't untl the age of 17 when Paul found his calling to create clever pop songs based on life experience, emotion and humor on a six string guitar.
Now 24, Paul lives in New York City. In the summer of 2002, Paul had an internship at Epic Records in the Video Promotions department where he learned first hand how a record company operates. Following this he trained with Beth Burrows, a professional vocal coach, singer/songwriter and Julliard graduate. Together they worked on all of Paul's music to get the best sound possible. This year he has dedicated his time to performing in New York City at a variety of venues such as The Bitter End, Kenny's Castaways and Orange Bear, to develop a following. Paul is also working on his first record this year. He is recording with his producer, Eran Westwood, in Sub Sun studio.
Paul's main goal is to sign with a record company so that he may make and play music for a living. Contunuously writing in Central Park where he finds the most inspiration, his music can be compared to his influences: Third Eye Blind, The Beatles and Blink 182. This combination creates a style all his own.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
I live in New York so I usually play in spots on Bleeker Street where there is more of a singer/songwriter scene. I enjoy the neighborhood and the small community of working musicians.
Your musical influences
My musical influences have a vast range. The influences I feel my music sounds like are The Beatles, Third Eye Blind, and Blink 182. Other influences have been The Doors, Nirvana, The Cure, Weezer, and Jimmy Buffett
What equipment do you use?
I like Ibanez guitars. I have an acoustic/electric and a strat. When I was recording I used a Gibson acoustic and a Les Paul. Those are great guitars!
