Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Pat 'the Hat' Goodrich is a performing BMI songwriter from the Central San Joaquin Valley region of California, now residing in Nashville, Tennessee. He is a former long-time Regional Coordinator for the Nashville Songwriters Association International. (NSAI on the Web at: www.nashvillesongwriters.com) He has been a “professional performer” since his high school years and was a founding member of the original 'BOY HOWDY' Band. (Circa 1979, pre-L.A., “pre-Jeffrey” Steele.) He began writing songs at the age of 10, after "Sonny the milkman" showed him how to tune his first guitar. (He's always kinda "wondered" about Sonny -?) He plays 6 & 12-string acoustic & electric guitars, diatonic "blues" harmonicas, and mandolin. In an effort to enhance his recordings, he has also learned how to program a variety of MIDI generators, sequencers, and digital samplers. He continues to record, engineer, and produce his own demo recordings and CD masters. He has performed in venues from Canada to Texas, including the Gold Coast Saloon during National Finals Rodeo, Billy Bob’s Fort Worth, Texas, the House Of Blues in North Hollywood, and has made regular appearances at many of Nashville’s “music landmarks”: Legend’s Corner, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, and The Bluebird Café. His easily recognized 7 1/2" slightly bell-crowned “high topper” hat has been a performance trademark since his 'BOY HOWDY' Band days. He has shared the stage with a wide variety of internationally recognized entertainers, encompassing nearly every facet of Country music. The list includes among others: “Traditional Country” music legends George Jones, the Oak Ridge Boys, Bobby Bare and Lacey J. Dalton; "Texas Swing" masters Joe Holley & the All Stars and Asleep At The Wheel; “Country Bluegrass” artist Ricky Skaggs; "New Traditionalist" Country artists Randy Travis, and Tracy Lawrence; "Pop Country" artists Steve Wariner, Rick Treviño, and Mark Wills; "Southern Rockers" the Charlie Daniels Band and the Marshall Tucker Band; "Blues" and "Cajun" artists Leo Nocientelli & Ivan Neville, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Queen Ida; and TNN “Blue Collar TV” comedian, Bill ("Here's Your Sign") Engvall. Prior to relocating from Hanford, California (Fresno area) to Nashville in the spring of 2004, he had been a long-time contributor to community HIV/AIDS awareness efforts, and served as a panelist on the Central San Joaquin Valley ‘Ryan White Funding’ Review Board for two years. At the request of local organizers, he performed original songs based on annual themes selected by the WHO (World Health Organization) for World AIDS Day (December 1st) observances. He routinely served as “Official Announcer” for the Downtown Hanford Association’s ‘Children’s Christmas Parade & Salvation Army Holiday Canned Food Drive’, and as “M.C.” several consecutive years for the Kings County 'Special Olympics' Annual "Chili Challenge" Fundraiser. He is “thrilled” of his recent promotion from ‘Administrative Assistant’ to ‘Creative Director’ of Nashville’s ‘Sharp Objects’ and is extremely proud of his long-time association with the Sharp family songwriting dynasty.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Nashville, TN at present. I'm hoping to get moving on the "house concert" circuit in the coming months. I've had some recent offers to do this as a direct result of "playing out" in the Nashville songwriter hangs. (Bluebird Cafe, Commodore Lounge, others.) The truth? Some nights and performances are just better than others. I've had pretty good luck presenting new songs on a routine basis, rather than relying on the same 3 I started out with. "Special moments"? Probably nothing will ever compare to performing for a group of SEVERELY mentally and physically challenged children at a school for "Special Needs" kids when I was first starting out on my own. A former girlfriend, who worked with these kids and had asked me to do this, informed me after my solo acoustic performance that one boy she had worked with for 9 months to try to teach him how to hold a spoon to enable him to do something as basic as feed himself was relentlessly attempting to applaude my performance by forcing one uncooperative hand against the other in mid-air. Needless to say, I was both amazed and humbled to realize what effort and determination it took for him to do this.
