Past Forever

Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Four strangers fated to come together to create one harmonious unit in none other than Jasper, Indiana. Never heard of it? Dont feel bad. There arent a lot of people who have. But soon you will be hearing about the band, Past Forever. In short, Nick Brames (guitar), Marlee Grabiel (piano/vocals), Chappy Sinclair (bass/occasional guitar) and Jay Sorrells (drums/vocals) found each other and together are forging new musical territory in the Southern Midwest. Not one of these four is a stranger to what it takes to be in the band. Nick, originally from Jasper has previously been in three different bands, winning Battle of the Bands awards and playing in cities such as Louisville, Indianapolis and Evansville. He has been playing the guitar for thirteen years and draws inspiration from Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Corrosion of Comformity, Tool and Kiss. He became friends with bassist Chappy Sinclair in their last band, Biaxident. Nick is very accustomed to playing heavier music; however, what makes him a unique guitarist is his ability to write melodic rifts along with the heavier style of playing. Chappy Sinclair, originally from Tucson, Arizona, moved continuously through Mexico, Arizona, Peru, South America and California until finally coming to Indiana in 1987. He has previously been in six different bands and has been playing music for twenty-three years. He has several musical influences. Some of them are Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull, Spyro Gyra, Frank Marino, Zep, Genesis, Ozzy, Herbie mann, Chic Corea, the Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles, Cynic, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Slayer and Testament. Although many of the bands Sinclair has been a part of have been heavier rock and metal, he is very diverse and versatile in his musical tastes and abilities. Furthermore, he is also a talented writer. Jay Sorrells joined the band at the beginning of 2004. Originally from Shoals, Indiana, he is familiar with Southern Indianas music scene and has played in numerous miscellaneous bands in the area. He has done sound recording for different bands for three years as well. His last and most serious venture was with Learning to Fall, with which he played for two and a half years. He listens to and is inspired by a wide variety of artists and bands such as Staind, Motley Crue, Nickelback, Alice in Chains and Sevendust. Marlee Grabiel joined the band after meeting Jay at a show she was playing as a solo artist in Shoals, Indiana. She has previously been in three bands and has been writing songs since the age of fourteen. She started playing the piano and singing at age three and picked up the guitar at age thirteen. She won a piano competition for the state of Michigan when she was 12 years old and has made two solo albums before joining Past Forever. She was trained classically but plays a variety of blues, folk, jazz and rock. She has been influenced by Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Tori Amos, Alice in Chains, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Bon Jovi, Tracy Bonham, Tracy Chapman, B.B. King and countless others. She has her Music Industry Management degree as well and has interned for Korg, the Songwriters Guild of America Nashville and EMI/CMG/Sparrow Records. These four come from a wide variety of backgrounds and musical tastes, but that is what makes them unique and sets them apart from other bands. Theyve taken their styles and tastes and merged them to make a unique hard rock sound that incorporate melodic vocals. Their ability to work together, compromise and communicate with each other in addition to their passion and drive to play and write music is what will take them to the top.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
We play live around Southern Indiana right now, but we're hoping to branch out regionally and play other places around the area to start with and grow from there. We love to play live, and we want more gigs!
Your musical influences
We are a hard rock band with a sound similar to Evanescence, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Alice and Chains and maybe Megadeth. We aren't so much like any one of these that we don't have our own sound. We came from a variety of backgrounds ranging from heavy metal to classical so we've merged these extremes to give our music our own unique flavor.
What equipment do you use?
guitar, bass, drums, keyboards
