One Drop Redemption is led by the Jamaican born veteran singer/songwriter Jahmark Tafari. Not only did Jahmark Tafari know Bob Marley and that he use to watch Bob and the Wailers rehearse at Bob's mother's home in Miami [he is longtime friend of the Marley family], also Jahmark's stage credits includes work with some of the best known international reggae artists in the world. Everyone from Ziggy and Julian Marley to Eek-A-Mouse, Jimmy Cliff, Pato Banton, and English Beat.
The 'riddum' (rhythm) section of One Drop Redemption is made up of some of the finest reggae musicians from both Jamaica and the US, making One Drop Redemption one of the most authentic Bob Marley Tribute acts in the world!
A Founding member, SubaDread (lead and pick guitars), proudly stated that, "we knew we were on the right track with Bob's music when in 2009, we opened for Bob's son, Julian Marley, at the Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach California. Julian came up to us after our show and gave us the best compliment a Jamaican can give you. He simply told us, RASpect!"
Band/artist history
We were originally formed in the winter of 2005. The founding members were Terrell, Frank, Papa Levi, Jeff, Pedro, and myself. Jeff and I, for the past 5 years are the only remaining original members. The rest went on to other projects. Pedro's now a big wig with the Dept. Of Agriculture; although he did us a favor by coming back in 2010 to do a show with us in Lava Springs, Utah a few years ago...In 2007, Jahmark Tafari (lead vocals), Cedric Bravo (vocals, sax), and Tyrone Rudulph came on board. Then about 3 years ago 'Thee Angelics' (Atara and Ashley Phillips) join the group to sing backup vocals. Our bass player, Tafar Watkis, joined about 2 years ago after our then bass player, Kevin Abdullah, left the band to study music at the New England Conservatory Boston, Mass.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes. As one of a few Bob Marley Tribute bands, we're in high demand. We've performed at many weddings, corporate, private events, as well as concerts. We performed regularly, as a headliner at the Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, The Brixton in Redondo, and the Malibu Inn over the last 7 years. We use to perform regularly, a few years back at Harrah's Rincon Resort near San Diego, CA. Now, that's a nice venue. The people really loved us there. We also performed and supplied the live music for their 'Miss Hawaiian Tropics' competition one year. That was interesting; performing with 20 young beautiful models in front of us. I remember looking at the faces of my band members as if they were thinking, 'it don't get much better than this'! As a contrast to that event, we've performed for many religious organizations over the years; everything from weddings (we were featured in an edition of People Magazine doing a celebrity wedding in Topanga), to Bar and Bat Mitzvah's. We also did a couple TV shows. One special moment was a performance on Paris Hilton's and Nicole Richie's show, 'The Simple Live' for E! Entertainment. That was an interested shoot. We even got to perform one of our original songs on that show. I got quite a kick out of watching Paris and Nicole dancing and singing along on a song that I wrote!
Your musical influences
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Thee I Threes. Reggae music reigns For 'I' vor! We love Pato Banton, Steel Pulse, Aswad...too too many to mention, Iyah!
What equipment do you use?
I have a vintage Peavey Hydra Double neck guitar, a Gibson LP and a SG, a 50th Anniversary American Strat, several nice acoustic guitars. Amp wise I have a Fender Blues Deville, a Fender Hot Rod Deville, a Fender Blues Jr that I use for recording, Peavey Custom tube amp with a solid state pre-amp, as well as a Roland JC 120 amp, and a Carvin 100 watt solid state amp for when I don't feel like hauling the others around. We have a Soundcraft Series 200 mixer that I use mostly in my Pro Tools studio, and the a Behringer 32 channel concert console that we use for our smaller gigs. I also own a B3 organ originally customized by Hammond for 'Deep Purple's 1972 US tour! I got it from a local rental guy who got rid of it because it was taking up space in his shop. It has clear purple fiber glass and looks really cool on stage when the tubes light up! We don't bring it out much because of its age and it is really fragile. Also, our production doesn't like hauling it and the Leslie cabinet around.
Anything else?
We've just finish a show at the Saint Rocke last weekend and we're heading up to San Francisco for a show this Sunday. We've also got some inquiries about some end of the year work and we're scheduled to go out on tour with Alex Marley, Bob's cousin starting later this year. We're also look forward to finishing our new recording by next spring. Life is sweet...
