Nova (Philly)
We're an alternative rock band from Philadelphia. We're young and determined to make our mark on the scene. If you're ever in the Philly area, come check us out.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Nova has been long in the making. It started out as me (Ry) and our bassist (Chree) jamming as young kids. We were clueless as of what to do, but we loved it. If that doesn't satiate your hunger, check out www.novaband.com.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
We love to play live. So far, we've played all through out the northeast part of Philadelphia. We're looking to branch out into downtown Philly, and then onward to New York and the tri-state area.
Your musical influences
Each member of the band is influenced by very different types of music. I'm (Ry) into a lot of blues (i.e. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Budddy Guy). I'm also into a lot of modern rock (Matchbox 20, Jet, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Incubus, Dave Matthews Band), classic rock (Led Zeppelin, The Who, Steve Miller Band), and singer-songwriters (John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen). Chree is into a lot of heavier music (i.e. Tool), some crazier funkier stuff (Stanley Clarke, anything Les Claypool, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, 311, Incubus). And Mikey is into emo (Thursday, Coheed and Cambria), funk/rock (311, Incubus, Dave Matthews Band), jazz (Buddy Rich), and some wild hardcore stuff that I can't remember the name of.
What equipment do you use?
We're pretty gear-oriented. I use Fender Strats (a surf green 50's reissue strat, a 1996 25th anniversary Stevie Ray Vaughan strat, and a 48th street strat) and a Fender Thinline Tele through a Fender 1965 Super Reverb Reissue. I also use a variety of boss, morley, and ibanez pedals. Chree plays a Warwick 5-string through an Ampeg head and two Ampeg cabinets (118, 410). Mikey plays a 6-piece pearl export set, an orange county vented 40-ply snare, zildjian and sabian cymbals.
