Non-Fiction is a hip-hop rap duo formed by Percy Freeman and Larry Porter from Holly Springs, MS. Since leaving a life of drugs, alcohol and theft they have dedicated their lives to rapping and encouraging the youth to look past a life that leads to destruction. Originally, their debut album "Saved Identity" began as a solo project by Freeman, but soon he joined up with Porter to create a street savvy, dynamic record full of hip hop beats with a mix of rock. Their lyrics move and inspire putting everyone on their feet, while reaching an audience that longs for a change in their culture.Band/artist history
Converting from a life of darkness into the Light with many obstacles along the way, is a rough road for anyone to travel, but the end result is always worth the fight. Conquering a life of drugs, alcohol, gambling and theft, both Freeman and Larry Porter have come out swinging and on top, forming the gospel rap group Non-Fiction. “There are great benefits and a lifetime warranty when you work for God!” states founding member Percy Freeman.
The duo began rapping together at a young age in their hometown, Holly Springs, MS with all efforts focused on a career in the secular scene and a lifestyle that reflected that. Freeman began growing tired of his old life looking for a new direction and became curious about God. He found a local church and surrendered all he had to the Lord and began a new mission to continue creating lyrics and beats, but just delivering a different message. Soon after, Larry followed with the same desire to see others come to know the Lord. Before long, the journey of Non-Fiction began.
Originally, Saved Identity began as a solo project, but soon transformed into NonFiction’s debut album. Percy sought a solo career after he was first saved and was later joined by Larry who was a good friend and shared the same love for the music. “We eat, sleep and live rap. It is something we love to do, and why not benefit others by doing it”, Percy sums up the group’s love of the art. The heart of the record consists of where Non-Fiction came from and what they have been through. Reaching out towards youth, but not limited by that either, Saved Identity, is a direct and vibrant record.
Non-Fiction delivers the Truth with their street savvy lyrics and a heart to reach and connect with a younger generation by offering an alternative to what the world suggests:
“Lord save my soul, nothing’s missing now I’m whole. People sometimes let me down, but God always got control”, proclaims the album’s intro track,“Still Servin’ God”. It focuses on being a Christian and still being cool, unashamed in imitating Christ. Other songs such as “Miracles” describe understanding the ways of God and how He still performs miracles today. They speak from their life experiences and are able to reach wide audiences with a valuable engaging story.
The name Non-Fiction identifies these two dynamic and energetic artists that the Truth will be delivered with no barriers or lies. Through lyrics that move and inspire to beats that will have anyone moving, they reach the ones that are desperate for a change in their culture. Whether listening to the album through a stereo or watching them perform live, you will experience the same intensity through every rhythm. Non-Fiction has fought the fight and has a message to proclaimHave you performed in front of an audience?Mid-south...Memphis, TN area.
