... an unusual ensemble where classical instruments as english horns plays with percussion something strange as toys, with a sax that play the gregorian or his estemporaneous solos in a music that is not easy to classify. Moreover, an improbable tuba...
Five musician by different experiences are under the Nomos Quintet by Nuccio Trotta.

Sabrina Nardi, voice, english horn
Santo Sgro', percussions and... strange things
We don't have a style: there are Jazz, classical, experimental, melodic, contemporary; there are new intruments created just for the group. The point of this musicians is in the freedom to navigate in various styles without schemes.

We all know the importance of external influences in our being and how much they can affect our behavior. Driven by the schemes and the compromises of everyday living, sometimes we suffer of this appearing freedom.
But our living immersed by technology, which ties us to itself, gives us comfort and, more importantly, security because we are surrounded by situations that eventually will show as irrevocable deceitful. If we imagined our live without computers, internet, car, phone or mobile, we would be shipwreck. We would feel completely uncomfortable.
But conditioning and schemes do not exist only in our practical side of. In music the same thing happens. If you ask a musician of every rank and musical culture to play freely (where freely means something that prevents rational control), he will fall inevitably into his schemes, created by several hours of exercises or he will play nothing instinct will non be easily a protagonist. The musician too is, in some way, subjected to references points, because it’s in our nature not to wander in the darkness, but to find the exit whenever possible.
But if we think about primitives, we know that the succession of sounds, instinctive in the human nature, was used for different necessities or soul expressions. For sure the first sequences of notes or percussive noises were ruleless but followed the instinct of whom created the same sounds.
In that ancient way of expression was a freedom which man, with his thought and irresistible inclination to ration, has lost by the way.
Today, after thousands years, it seem music is returning to that archaic expression, where the most evolved musician get rid of his memories in order to bear something that did not exist and will dissolve, a return to the roots, felt as spontaneity of an instinct nearly full.Almost a circle in which we return to the starting point, after an awesome journey started from an animal leather strained over a cave trunk, and finishing to contemporary music, “jazz or not jazz”.
The production of this musical trend thrives whit artists who in recording studios have increasingly less parts on the reading desk
if any at all.
All this seems to completely deny tradition, but it isn’t like that. On the contrary, it is about trying to reach the origin of our source, and of course it isn’t simple. We should manage to climb over our knowledge, and as said before, our schemes are strongly rooted. I’d like also to point out that this does create neither chaos nor causality. It would be disregarding to think in a wrong way about these projects, and to think about nomos as a group which plays in the directions of originality at any cost, based on a “random” music.
Like many other tracks also the music of nomos consists of collective “frees”, where nothing is written about the performance of these sections. Of course, as said at the beginning, musicians not used to these types of experiences get dizzy, because there aren’t anymore a harmonic progression, pentagram to interpret, pattern to play, in a word a reference.
At this point we close our eyes and play trying not to rationalise what we are playing because if we would do so we would be framing something that is tied only to the transient moment in which it was created, bound to dissolve in a soap bubble. We know this goes beyond music with solos and backgrounds directed to explicate the skills of the soloist. There is no structure where at first there is the main theme, then the solos, then again main them maybe a little varied.
What is written in the tracks is used as trace and container for expressing individual and collective instinctivity of the members of the quintet, and sometimes the writing requires fussiness by each member of the quintet.
So we try to remember our roots and to live the ancient freedom within music, in a sort of timeless lightness, freed by the weight of rules and teaching.
In a way, if you want, the meaning of the artist lies in his freedom. If schemes forged the majority of our musical language at the moment of his expression, I think we would be once more slaves of an uncontrollable mechanism and maybe could not appoint ourselves as artists.
Sometimes scores requires precision, and there is nothing improvised. This is no contradiction to what said before, as the combination of “fully free” and “fully written” is one of the strength of nomos’ music.
Concerning the name of the group I wanted to point out the historical moment in which the transition of musical trend from “uncoded” to “defined” was happening. In fact in the ancient Greece they felt the need to identify and collect those sounds sequences that were employed and repeated for different social and affective uses. Those sounds sequences were called "nomoi" ["nomos" (nomos) sing.]. This evolution took place around VII century b.C.
Lastly, about the logo I chose circularity to underline continuity and desire to return to an instinctive primitivity, to get as real as possible our artistic expression through a challenging journey in the direction of the ancient man.Have you performed in front of an audience? We've played in important festival of medieval music in Switzerland.
