Multi-talented, gifted, determined. Traits you would hope from any individual, but the first three that come to mind when describing the hip hop artist known as Nautilus. Born in the south and raised overseas in the poverty-stricken country of Cameroon, Nautilus brings to the table an unsubtle array of talents and experiences rarely seen in the music industry. Nautilus, Born as Maynard Okereke in Austin, TX , has lived a life embedded in music, culture, and personal struggle. The combination of his West African roots and adolescent upbringing in the Northwest state of Washington, have given him many diverse influences that are clearly reflected in his music. Bursting in the music scene on the underground level, Nautilus started his early career battling competition on the streets and onstage, winning a number of local freestyle competitions. As he continued to develop, his onstage presence was taken to another level as he performed with other gifted local MC, Nisan, to form the group ASC. Opening for acts such as Blackilicous and Kool Keith, the group solidified their presence in the NW up and down the I-5 corridor from Seattle to Portland. Keeping music as a cornerstone, Nautilus continued to excel on the academic level with the goal of being able to support his immediate family and those struggling overseas. His dedication earned him a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Washington and only added to his arsenal of lyrical power and brought a much needed return of substance and depth lacking in music today. His latest solo movement after a short layaway from the music scene, plus his new distinct swagger and confidence in experimenting with a variety of styles and beats has generated a lot of local buzz for the NW artist. With so many other cities hitting the forefront and establishing their hip hop presence, Nautilus is focused and ready to put not only the city of Seattle, but the entire Northwest on the map.
