Narrow Gauge Band

Rockin Americana country tunes played by some of Colorados finest musicians.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
a virtual band made up of some of the most talented and brilliant musicians in Colorado. The idea behind NGB started with a bunch of songs, and how truly fine players might someday interpret those songs. Here's the deal . . . . . . . With a "vision" for how a selection of tunes might sound, songs primarily written in the late 1980s (in Southern California) and early 1990s (Boulder), the idea of creating a CD instead of starting a band made perfect sense. In fact, it was a long-time interest in the recording process (I've always thought record producing was the coolest job on the planet) that led to the creation of Narrow Gauge Band. The first step was to find someone with experience in this area. By poking around the Internet, and reviewing the Colorado Music Association Website, I ran across a name that seemed familiar -- Doug Haywood. I knew there was a Doug Haywood who had backed Jackson Browne for years. Sure enough, Doug was Doug Haywood. Not only that, Doug runs a well-equipped, comfortable and affordable studio from his home that sits about two miles from my house. Finding Doug was a breakthrough moment -- a tipping point of sorts. He's a true pro in every sense of the music creation process and his influence advanced the overall quality of this project immensely. Next, I approached my long-time friend and guitar-playing comrade Doug Rutherford, who I've played music with for more than 20 years. Because Doug had played many of the tunes that make up Gravedigger's Delight, I knew he could help lay basic tracks consisting of guitar (Doug), bass (me) and a drum machine. After building the basic tracks (with Doug Haywood making significant contributions on acoustic guitar as well), the rest of the instrumentation was layered onto the recording. Starting with Donna Debreceni on piano, Daniel Jones on pedal steel and Dobro, Sally Van Meter on lap steel and Dobro, and Gordon Burt on fiddle. From there, big Joe Romer added rock-solid drumming and Doug Rutherford came back and work-out some fine guitar solos. Harmony vocals were added -- and the result is the current CD.
