Mz Shorty BN
A breed of 'Chikalo' (Brunei's Girl Rap Family), I've been introduced to the local rap scene only 4 years ago. My releases have been slow and steady, a result of luck, hardwork and opportunities. As of late, I work independently, hoping to strengthen the BRUscene in ways that Bruneians have not ventured in yet.
Tell me about your history? How did you get where you are now?
Started listening to hip hop music during the teen years. I won't lie to you. I'm not an extremist who bows down to hip hop like it's religion, but i love the music along R&B and dig the beats and music production. I listen a lot to lyrics so when Brunei's hip hop community was buildin and everything, i thot that i'd give it a shot. Got together with some girls (like Zee) and formed Chikalo, this girl group family. We work together and also found sum guyz who new to d biz too. And tada. We just do our ish over the internet n hopefully ppl listen to it.
Have you performed live in front of an audience? Any special memories?
Brunei's scene needs to resurrect itself. We will. We do it live at the amphitheatre most of the time. Special moments include 'Absolutely Red', down with TTC at 'Urban Blackout' and 'Ezlynn's Showcase'.
Your musical influences
Man, there'z so many. I like 2Pac but i ain't influenced by him. Don't get me wrong, i do respect him. I love the R&B movement of Salt and Peppa, Angie Martinez and TLC. Love music by Babyface, KRU and listen to many underground ish by the world underground rappers. Everything'z a mix of influences, from travelling around n all. So u never kno what to expect.
What equipment do you use?
a pc, a mic, and lyric book.
Anything else?
:) I don't mind being whack. It's music of my soul.
