a strummed folk song with backing
folk philosophy
Artist picture
Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
An interesting philosophical dialogue (oh yes, things could get deep ) One of the few strumming’ songs from this period (well, once you’ve learnt how to finger-pick you don’t like to downgrade to a plectrum, do you) so I probably didn’t play it much at the time but that very openness makes it more suitable for arrangement.
Lyrics
Early today she asked me whether Time is the power that holds us together I said if you mean is there something above us And is there a power we can never discover I told her she could be right but I don’t think we need to worry She said that the days take so long to be leaving And she can’t see the ways that her life-threads are weaving And many’s the hour that she’s sat by her curtain And watched them who pass, those whose vision is certain I told her to use her sight and see that their eyes are empty For the day is the reason for everything And the light is there to see And to live is the best thing that day can bring There is nothing else to be
