love folk

Singer-songwriter, arranger and producer: acoustic contemporary folk but ranging into rock/blues/country/jazz/humour...all very eclectic, I'm afraid!
Martin Stirrup Singer/songwriter An old folkie who got back into it... These days I sing and play guitar(s) and other stringed instruments, then score and orchestrate where appropriate. My taste becomes increasingly eclectic ranging from finger-picked folk through country to soft rock mixed in with a few more alternative and eccentric numbers, including the odd novelty foxtrot...

Story behind the song
A very early song from East Ham days. I probably played it at Richard Digance’s club at the Eyes of Time’, Manor Park. Like most of these very early songs it’s in simple ballad form too many words, not enough music (but, hey, I was very young). To make it work as a recording I added percussion and an organ/piano riff.
Lyrics
Hello Maria it’s good to see you again I wondered could it be you haven’t seen you since I don’t know when How has life treated you since we fell apart I still remember the time you dismembered my heart What’s that on your finger, s that a ring there How long have you been tied No use your lying you’ve been crying I can see it in your eyes Is it really over now this time you didn’t win Did he realise see through your lies punish you for your sin When he said that he’d be leaving had you believing he’d be back again Now you’ve had a letter someone better is wearing his name Why are you standing there quoting his words at me You want him for forever but you know that that can never be You look as though you’re lacking financial backing your clothes are torn Do you want me to take pity you’re still pretty though a little worn Maybe I could fit you in to my concubine You could be the founder member help me remember far better times Hello Maria it’s good to see you again
