A cynical but upbeat song about making it (or not) in the entertainment business in Los Angeles (or, really, anywhere)
rock jazz rock sophisticated rock
Folk music for postmoderns
I am what you might call a musical generalist. I listen to pretty much everything and I compose in pretty much any style, though I concentrate mainly on folk, folk-rock, rock, synth-pop, alternative, comedy, musical theatre, jazz, new-age, film music, avant-garde, and the occasional lullaby (why sing your kid to sleep with "Rock-a-bye Baby" when you can can create something personalized?). I've done most of my professional (i.e. paid) work in the theatre, where I've been musical director for dozens of productions. I was also musical director of Mental Floss, the legendary Miami improv group, for over 500 performances; I recently did a stint with Laughing Gas, which rose from the ashes of Mental Floss 11 years ago to become the longest running improv group in South Florida. As a singer-songwriter, I've concentrated most of my energy on my signature style of synth-driven folk-rock (sort of Indigo Girls meets Vangelis). I'm also something of a minor celebrity in the world of Filk (folk music for science fiction fans), where I am proud to be the object of the worlds smallest international fan base.

Lyrics
[verse 1] I took the big leap And landed on my feet But I didn't have no money So I wound up on the street I hustle here and there Just to get a dime Like to break into the business But I haven't got the time [bridge] Have you seen my latest picture? It's all inside my mind Everybody in this town's Starring in their own life and times [chorus] Gotta be an engineer just to get a job Gotta be a movie star to get into the club Gotta have a press card just to stand in line Gotta have a talk show or you're not one of our kind [verse 2] So I get myself an agent Make myself a name But I'm just another shadow In this bright light hall of fame I get myself connected Get myself a gig But I finally found It's hand-to-mouth Until you make it big. [bridge] Have you heard my latest single No one ever will Shoppin' 'round this demo Has quickly lost its thrill [chorus] Gotta be an engineer just to get a job Gotta be a movie star to get into the club Gotta have a press card just to stand in line Gotta have a talk show or you're not one of our kind [instrumental] [verse 3] I signed with a label Then they let me go But I got a consolation gig In the studio I've cut a hundred singles Though you don't know my name But there can be moral victories Even in the L.A. game But the moral of this story No there isn't one Here today, gone tomorrow Might as well have fun [chorus] Gotta be an engineer just to get a job Gotta be a movie star to get into the club Gotta have a press card just to stand in line Gotta have a talk show or you're not one of our kind [instrumental outro]
