Story behind the song
My dad was an alcoholic. He spent some time in the county jail for nonsupport. They would let him out as a trustee and he would walk the city streets and play Harmonica to get money for his wine. In the summer he would sleep in the weeds, boxcars, or in cardboard boxes, many times by the floodwalls that protected the city from the Ohio River.
He could have been so much more...He pitched baseball for the Army & the St Louis Browns. Wounded in Normandy. Everyone called him Wick.
Lyrics
Verse 1
Funky Ol Hillbilly standing on the corner
With a brown paper bag..cost him a dollar and a quarter
Playing the French Harp, St. Louis Blues
And the children's favorite...one they call that Fox Chase tune
II
Drive on around the block, don't you park this car
He'll have you on the sidewalk, playing your guitar
So he can make more money for his time
And buy himself a more expensive bottle of wine
Cho
This old man is haunting me
All around this town, and all my friends can see
Gotta get away from this ornery ol' cuss
This here town ain't big enough for the two of us
