Things We Need (The Farmer's Ballad)
Copyright: Nathan C. Rylant, 1999
This goes out to true heroes who make this country what it is,
Who are keepin' a tradition for the simple fact of what it is,
They're not searchin' for fortune or fame, or nothin' that they haven't earned
They're just tryin' to make a livin', best they can, for what it's worth.
Chorus
They do us favors everyday, with little or no complaint
Without them, we'd just fade away
Because they grow the things we need.
Stock options come with the snows, while the wind is howlin' and the temperatures low
The question is asked, when they sell my herd, will it pay off my loan
The kids are tucked into bed, dreamin' of things they wish they had
While mom and daddy count their pennies and worry about their babies.
Repeat Chorus
Benefits come when you retire and to some that brings a welcome smile
But farmin' and ranchin', it gets in your blood, the only way to retire is when you die
When the only thing owed is gratitude for the blood, sweat, and the years
Of givin' their lives to feed and clothe you and I and all of our kids.
They do us favors everyday, with little or no complaint
Without them we'd just fade away.
Everything I've said here is true, 'cause I know the life, just like you...
My hands are calloused and my hat is dusty.
Well, I was born with earth in my veins,
And I was two years old before it bothered to rain.
No fortune or fame...
And they just keep on fadin' away.
