Lyrics
In 1863 ©2009 Anthony Griffin 1. Lee and the Yankee army, for three days had a war In the hills of Pennsylvania, at a place called Gettysburg Almost two hundred thousand, men both rich and poor Joined in bloody battle, to decide forevermore 2. Each man fought for freedom, each man had his cause And fifty thousand lie together, on the fields of Gettysburg The Rebels never ran away, and the Yankee’s held their line And valor claimed its own for all, those three days in July 3. Pickett’s men, that fateful day Marched as one, in battle array They left their bodies on hallowed ground With tears of angels, falling ‘round 4. A.P. Hill and Longstreet, and Lafayette McClaws Pickett , Early and John Bell Hood, were those who led the Cause And as the soldiers killed each other, with rifle, gun and sword Their captains led these tattered men, while iron cannon roared 5. From the Round Top mountains, on that third day The Yanks blew down the boys in grey And General Lee, under that bright sun Cried salt tears, for what he’d done 6. For three days in July, in 1863, The grey and blue in thousands died, for generals Meade and Lee, One dream lay dead upon the ground, their war was lost that day And Yanks in blue took sad account, of the price they had to pay 7. Who can say who would prevail, that the battle might have turned If Stuart ‘s horse had been in play, instead of glory earned Or if Lee in his well-earned pride, had rested that last day And if Sykes had not stood his ground, in that bloody fray One hundred fifty years ago, in 1863 Two armies fought a bloody war For life and liberty, in 1863 For three days in July, in 1863
