It was the movie and that film score that it hit me,then i knew that this was something i would very much want to do" Comments from John in 2009.

Story behind the song
John wanted to do a folk song that would have an old west story behind it.After some historical reading and background checking he came up with a fictional account of a train robbery set between a depot in kansas and Denver,CO.He then asked vocalist Loraine Washburn if she would bring the story to life in voice. She does a masterful job singing this western folk song.
Lyrics
Western Wind (Lyrics by John Catney) 1st Verse: Out on the plains in the summer of 71... The smith boys and their posse, try to do whats never been done... Take a shipment of gold from a federal train... Need to think of a plan before the september rains...and the autumn snows. 2nd Verse: cross the kansas border, heading for newton town... at the railway depot, there were soldiermen all around... 40,000 in gold and they were guarding it well... the wheels began to turn to the train whistle bell...they were moving out. ...in the western wind. Bridge: a hat and a coat,a gun and an old cigar. all that will be a bank robber's friend. riding ahead with 2 sticks of dynamite... the train slows to a stop, the doors began to unlock, the battle begins... ...in the western wind. (fiddle solo) 3rd Verse: in the heat of the battle, the posse falls all around. 2 smiths are left bloody, broken and pinned down. one of them starts to run and is shot in the head. the other drops his gun now he's grab by the feds...in the midday sun. ...in the western wind. 2nd Bridge: a hat and a coat,a gun and an old cigar. all that will be a bank robber's friend. but the denver judge started to lay the law. the smith boy had no hope, cause he's dancing on the end of a rope, hung till he's dead ...in the western wind. ...in the western wind. ...in the western wind. ...in the western wind.
