Story behind the song
I recently watched an interview/track build with Chris Lake on a Computer Music DVD. He was using a Reaktor instrument, “FatCat,” for the bass on the track he was showing. Now, I’m a pretty religious Reaktor user library downloader, but somehow I’d missed this nifty little synth. I downloaded it, loaded it up, and got a little bassline going with one of the first presets on it. The final bass is processed through Voxengo’s Low-Frequency Max and Low-Frequency Punch, as well as the Marquis Compressor. Chris also used the Marquis Compressor in his track/video, which he hilariously mispronounced as the “Markwis” Compressor. The dude does not know his French, lol. Strike me down if the Voxengo creator also mispronounces it, though, lol. The echo/delay filtered sound on the bass is courtesy of Dieter Zobel’s “Echoperplex,” also from the Reaktor user library. The drums started off as simple loops made from the “French Kit” in Battery 3. I tweaked some tuning etc., then bounced them from Reaktor’s FlatBlaster2 for beef/saturation. Then I loaded them into Reaktor’s L3 (beat slicer) and programmed some loop variations. These I put on the track with some heavy EQ, filtering out most of the bottom end, as well as some of the top. When these loops played in isolation from the main loops, I automated the high-pass frequency band to lower, giving some more kick. The tinkly synth is an FM8 patch. I’d originally programmed an alternate bass line, which I only ended up using on this synth – which has some kind of screwy tuning, which gives it that dissonant sound. The last synth to come in is also FM8. I took a preset, changed some of the envelopes, then ran it through some filtering, bit reduction, and then a trance gate in Reaktor. Many tracks got the Voxengo Gliss EQ, and the reverbs were from the WizooVerbW2. Mastered in Ozone 3.
The track is techno, I reckon. I didn’t intend for it to be so long, it just kind of ended up that way. I’m sure it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, as it’s not very musical. Hell, it’s not even really my cup of tea, lol. I’ll be interested in everyone’s opinion of this piece, for sure.
On a side note, my latest album is out now – the link to it at CDBaby is below. The two tracks that I originally posted here, “Key to the House of Fun,” and “Poison Attachment,” are on the album. You can hear 2-minute clips of every song at CDBaby. It’s also up at ITunes – just do a search for “TechLo” and you’ll see my two albums there, if you’re interested.
