Story behind the song
The song “More Love, More Power” has found wide acceptance in worship services around the world. Appearing on numerous albums, it has most recently been recorded by Michael W. Smith and Jeff Deyo. Ironically, when Jude Del Hierro first composed the song, he didn’t even bother to write it down. A Song out of Devotion “It was during a personal devotion time,” he explains. “Part of what I would do was to sing to the Lord, expressing my heart to Him. This song just came out spontaneously.” Within a few minutes, the whole song came together without the revisions and crafting that songwriters usually face. Pleasantly surprised, he finished his devotional time and promptly forgot about it. The next day, during his prayer time, he remembered the song and was able to sing it again. Finally, after three days of the song sticking with him, He thought “Hmmm. Maybe God intends to do something with this.” At the time, Jude was involved in leading small-group worship. He began using the song in this setting. Noticing that people responded to it, he introduced the song to his church’s worship leader who began using it in services. One of Jude’s earlier songs—“Alleluia” had been already recorded on a 1985 Vineyard Music album. Following close on its heels, “More Love, More Power” appeared on the 1986 release “Glory.” He had no inkling at the time that over the next two decades, the song would become a permanent part of the praise and worship landscape. With its heartfelt sentiments and memorable melody, it wasn’t long before believers around the world were offering up the song up in a variety of languages and styles. Lyrically, “More Love, More Power” reflects both a prayerful hunger for God’s presence, and a declaration of completely surrendered worship. “It was a common prayer at that time in the Vineyard movement,” Jude relates. “God was moving and people were hungry for more of Him. They wanted to see more of His love and power in their lives.” The lyrics present a balanced view of seeking both God’s love and power, reflecting the emphasis found in 1 Corinthians 13. The ultimate focus of the song is on desiring God with all of one’s being. “God’s power should never be desired for our own sake,” Jude cautions, “Only for the advancement of His Kingdom purposes. It should be a natural result of more of God’s presence in our lives.”
