Nights Like These Are Free
A single woman in a small town goes to the city and runs into a street person.
Songs are like snapshots except that you can't see them.
These are my snapshots; I hope you like them.
Lyrics
she walked down to the red mailbox
more from habit than from hope
looked inside, felt around, nothing there
then she looked out at the road
went back in, changed her clothes and perfume
then she walked out to her car
driving down to the center of town
sang a song to the stars
(chorus)
"Nights, like these, are always free;
there's nothing else to be.
Nights
like these are free;
there's nothing else to be."
it was late--maybe 9 or 10
(she got to know her radio)--
one round light shining deep within the sky
lit the fields of wheat nearby
she hadn't been to the center of town
for weeks, or maybe even months......
finding a bench she sat right down
and sang a song to the stars
(chorus)
as she sat on that old park bench
saw a man across the street
he saw her watching him, he turned around,
she did not miss a single beat
he sat down next to her on the bench
his hands were dirty, hair a mess,
she got up, threw a couple dollars down
and sang a song to the stars
Nights like these
are NEVER free
there's nothing else to be(x2)
