Story behind the song
I came up with this song while I was talking to a friend about genetic engineering of food. He used the words "it's a form of fascism" and that stuck in my mind I guess. What really bothered me at the time was that the US government allowed companies to sell genetically engineered food to the public without labelling it as such. As a vegetarian, why didn't I have the right to choose the food I wanted to buy? On a related note, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream was sucessfully sued by Monsanto because Ben and Jerry's labels said the milk they used did not have bovine growth hormone added. I thought this was not only wrong, but it was also contradictory to American ideas of freedom--after all, we can't make a choide whether we buy food with modified DNA or milk with BGH/BST? Amazingly, I have found some companies are now putting out labels that specify "no genetically modified ingredients" or "no growth hormones added." It looks like we're finally able to speak out against Monsanto and other gigantic corporations.
