Story behind the song
The concept of ambient light is one addressing the fact that because of all the city lights the granduer of the stars is lost. It's like when you have lights on inside your house when it's dark outside and you can't see out the window because of the reflection of the lights on inside. I just applied it to hip hop as I experience it. Made the beat one Saturday and wrote the lyrics while at chilling between classes that week. Recorded it on like that Thursday at Arrash's pad with fucking drew on the couch. Arrash handles the cuts and scratches on here. "Industry Shakedown"
Lyrics
(Verse 1) Evading radar detection/ I begin to post the resume of a legend/ attempting/ to near perfection/ each bar and beat I make must be threatin'/ to you so-called veterans/ who still ain't accepting/ the mirrors reflection/ so for protection/ you wear big flashy jewelry/ [that's] looking useless as can be/ but you ain't foolin' me/ the view I see/ is a pathetic emcee/ who is soon to be/ just another used up, burned cd/ so go ahead and shine for the time being/ 'cause though it seems/ you always be outshining/ with limbs flooded with diamonds/ the underground is undermining/ you rapping tyrants/ for cockblocking their vibrance/ denying their brilliance is blinding/ (Chorus) (Verse) I'll admit emcees are a dime a dozen, and the brightest stars are few and far between/ but there's nothing I find more puzzling/ then when I'm seeing/ weak emceeing/ from the mainstream/ who still have the nerve to be adorned like kings/ they sold their people into slavery/ by catering/ to record companies flavoring/ for the wealth they've been savoring/ knowing damn well they're enabling/ cats that ain't laboring/ to use hip hop's name/ as their claim to fame/ and the abundance of their dull imagery/ leaves the hottest emcees shrouded in mystery/ and real hip hop heads in disbelief/ saying fuck the industry/ but that's the price we pay to hear these hip hop beats/ in the world's streets/ so I challenge myself lyrically/ and compose the symphony/ 'cause you need to wage war in order to restore peace/ PEACE! (Chorus) (Bridge) If you talk like a big shot/ rap like a wrist watch/ with no love for the disk jock/ you ain't hip hop/ you're an imposter/ dancing with wolves like kevin costner/ ask a mobster/ informants get shot first/ graf artist and breakers/ emcees and DJ who cut like razors/ we are all hip hop's saviors/ we must perserve traditions that came before us/ because culture is an unrenewable resource/ (Chorus) (repeat Bridge) (Chorus)
