Story behind the song
This song came to me in a dream.
The Dream
A business in town, started by outsiders, was choking out all the competition. They had a monopoly on a product everybody needed. Then a man developed a small device that, at very small cost to themselves (or no cost at all, as there was never any record of anyone but the inventor paying for it), rendered the peoples need for the monopolized product completely unnecessary. The monopolizers knew this inventor and did not have a very high regard for him.
Two beautiful young women were stuck in their dependence on the product that everyone needed. One had learned about the device and gotten free. The other was still enslaved to the monopolized product. They were both singers. As they sung in a concert, they both sang a song that they made up impromptu, on the spot. The dependent one, due to her need of this product, even when she saw many others getting free of their dependence, sang: I feel ugly, I feel no one loves me
Her friend and fellow singer sang: No you are lovely, you helped me become a woman.
Interpretation
This song, I believe, is a parable depicting various forms of addictions. I'm not an expert in addictions, but it seems like they are related to the struggle people have with self-concept. People need to think of themselves as valuable. We are all valuable enough that Jesus would come to Earth as a man and sacrifice His life to save us from sin. He freely offers us forgiveness, salvation, and an abundant life.
Lyrics
A man came to town and drug everyone down with a product he said they all needed
It gave them a high, but then by and by all their pocketbooks had been depleted
God sees your struggles; He sees your struggles; He wants to help you to get through
You turn to this product, but it cannot help you. When you come down, you feel shame; you feel blame
Then came a man who developed a cure, without cost to all those who conceded
Their need to forego this products allure, with his help their addiction defeated.
God sees your struggles; He sees your struggles; He wants to help you to get through
He sent us Jesus the cure for our sins, submitting to Him, brings liberty
Those who would keep you suppressed and in need would not intercede to set you free
They persecute Jesus and never release us to reach the potential that we can see
Two beautiful women were stuck in dependence on the product, but now ones free
Both talented singers, who could sing impromptu, both making up songs right on the spot
The one who was still suppressed and in need sang to her friend whod been set free
I feel ugly, I feel no one loves me. I wonder if anyone cares for me.
Her friend answered back to her confidently No you are lovely, you helped me become a woman.
And God sees your struggles; He sees your struggles; He wants to help you to get through
He sent us Jesus the cure for our sins, submitting to Him, brings liberty
