Story behind the song
The Laws of Physics (Romans 8:38 & 39) (Copyright 2000) Music by David L. Jones Lyrics by David L. Jones, Dustin T. Jones, Austin F. Jones, and Parker D. Jones I challenged myself to write a song by walking up to the piano and start with the first chord that I happened to play. That's the very first chord right at the beginning. It had kind of a suspended feel to it so I resolved it by adding a D in the bass for the first chord, then sliding each note down a whole step and making the bass note a G. I'd like to say the rest fell into place but it didn't. It actually took a couple of years to get to the final form. The ending section was going to be something completely different, but as do a lot of my songs, I hear things (progressions - melodies) just as I'm waking in the morning. The ending section just happened to come from one of those "twilight zones" (as I call them). I also like to place quotes in my tunes and arrangements just as long as it's not blatantly plagiaristic and doesn't change or make the original form of the tune. I could hear that parts the old spiritual "He's got the whole world in His hands" would fit nicely in the end section. Also, that section worked nicely as a bridge in the tune. The main idea of the tune is that no matter what we do we can never place ourselves beyond the love of God, exemplified by the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. He came to earth, lived and died, and rose again for everyone. But we do need to recognize that and "face the music" (as it were).
Lyrics
V.1 What keeps the sky from falling down? What keeps the stars from tumbling into the ground? Well, it’s God’s love, it’s God’s love. What keeps the heavens held in their place? What keeps the earth from spinnin’ off into space? Well, it’s God’s love, it’s God’s love. Chorus For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whosoever believes will not ever, ever die. V.2 What makes the ocean waves so blue? What makes the sun to rise when morning is new? Well, it’s God’s love, it’s God’s love. What turns a twig into a tree? What keeps the hills from crumbling into the sea? Well, it’s God’s love, it’s God’s love. Chorus For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whosoever believes will not ever, ever die. Bridge Not for a minute, not for a day, could we ever stand here and say that we exist outside of the love of God. (He’s got the whole world in His hands). V.3 What keeps this world from falling apart? What keeps the peace of God within out hearts? Well, it’s God’s love, it’s God’s love. Chorus For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whosoever believes will not ever, ever die. (He’s got the whole world in His hands).
