Black Ribbon Sky, based in Kansas City, MO., formed in late 2006 otherwise known as
BRS. From this author’s firsthand experience with this band, BRS has continually been
a solid conglomeration of musical influences coming together to make a unique sound
that works well on any stage.
Born from the ashes of several established bands local and regional, Black Ribbon Sky came together with the idea that the music they create should be enjoyed by the band first, and with that in mind, the fans will follow. Thought provoking lyrics, powerfully driven guitar work and a bottom end with emotion you can feel is found in every one of the songs Black Ribbon Sky has created. Fans of all genres of metal and hard rock can find something to enjoy, and ultimately feel, in every song Black Ribbon Sky writes and performs.
The Band has gone through a multiple line up changes, but the core guitar, bass, and
vocal crew has been together since the days when they considered calling themselves
Slowburn. That core consists of Jason Kane on the bass, Paul Lichtenauer on guitar, and
Justin Perkins singing his heart out.literally. The newest member of the crew is Troy
Gochenour banging out the beat on the drums. As mentioned before the band has gone
through a few permutations adding and subtracting rhythm guitars and two changes in
drummers. All members past and present have added greatly to the influence the growth
of this band and make it a local force to be reckoned with.
After playing more than 60 Shows in a very short time frame with the majority of them
in the KC area, This band went on Hiatus, Justin got married, Jason had a baby, Paul
finished his masters degree in education while also nurturing another side of his musical
creativeness by continuing to gig with the Monsters Of Tokyo, another great local
band. During this time, Troy G. was added to the band and although not a lot of gigging
occurred during this learning period, Troy and the boys did film the video for the song
Halo. BRS burst back on the scene this summer by competing in the Battle for Freaker’s
Ball and nearly took it all, making it to the finals. The crowds for this band were simply
amazing. Ask anybody, and you will know, BRS fans are rabid and the number of
different BRS shirts in the crowd is always a phenomenon to behold.
Black Ribbon Sky is poised to make a huge comeback in 2012; we all look forward to
hearing what they have in store for us. With every new song and every new show, the
band strives to give their fans an experience to be remembered. The Band personally
asks fans visiting shows to not only listen and look, but ultimately become part of the
experience. At most shows you can hear many voices singing along to songs such as
Halo, Buried Alive and many others.
