A call to give new pioneers a place to dwell, to build a house on their own terms and use the material at hand ... like pioneers of old did, but without using a gun to take land away from others.

Original songs about religious tolerance and freedom, liberation, independence, peace, and justice -- Jeffersonian in nature.
More recent recordings of these songs, with better arrangements and with more instrumentation, can be heard at http://www.soundclick.com/Jeffers. (Click ) The songs here were his first recording attempts and are just first takes recorded in early 2009 when the now 73 year old artist's health was steadily declining. He felt he was dying, so he finally picked up his guitar again after 26 years of not playing or singing, and recorded as many songs as he could while he could still sing and play just enough to do it. Since then with a new diagnosis and medicines his health improved a bit and he can breathe a bit better, so he has been working, whenever he was able, to improve the recordings and the arrangements, and record them on a better, 8 track digital portable studio recorder. It was kind of touch and go, but when he had relatively good days he did what he could and he finally produced a better 12 song album that he is a little more satisfied with. But, even as they are the songs here also deliver an important and crucial message --- because the lyrics of the songs are even more relevant now than when they were written more than 30 years ago. Story behind the song
I wrote it thinking about native indigenous peoples and homeless people (being one myself at the time). And I hope it sparks some willingness to enable new pioneers without much financial means to make homes for themselves and establish eco-villages and cooperative farming communites on public BLM land, and/or unused donated private land.
Lyrics
A PLACE TO DWELL Deep in the forest, I'd build me a house of wood. In the valley, I'd make one of clay. By the river, I'd build me a house of stone, yes I would. The trouble is, I've got nothin' to pay. But who owns this land, can you please tell me? Who did white pioneers pay? It's wrong to take a gun, and take what you please. But isn't that what they did in their day? Now you cannot build a house that's not up to code. It must have all those facilities. And you must pay those prices, even though they explode, And use up more resources and energy. Well, why can't we build a house on our terms, And use the materials at hand? With the light and the heat from the fire that we burn, And repay by nourishing the land. Yes, deep in the forest, I'd build me a house of wood. In the valley, I'd make one of clay. By the river, I'd build me a house of stone, yes I would. And can you tell me, who should I pay? Why can't we free some land from under the spell, Of almighty profit and greed? Give some new pioneers a place to dwell, And let 'em repay by planting some seeds. Copyright © 2009 - 2010 Try Try Again Project (TTAP)
