This is a song Neil wrote perhaps in 1995 before The Lapels were even thought of. When He and Kris tried it out in front of people the resonse was always very good.

The Lapels are a pop and folk music group from Orkney in Scotland
The Lapels were a band formed by three young chaps from Orkney in January 1996. They moved to Edinburgh in August 1996 or so with high hopes, having been a fairly decent success in Orkney. After another year certain differences led them to go their seperate ways. Kris Drever and Neil Dixon collaborated in various ways, most notably with the Celtic Wah Wah Co-op and Calum briefly played with Dave Valderhaug and Sean Brechin (formerly of the Tom and Dave Trio) as Wascomat 73. Calum still writes his own songs, Neil has been in a few bands since (Cloth Cat and Automatic Earth mostnotably) and also writes his own songs. Kris Drever has gone on to travel the world, form another band (Fine Friday) and get involved with such folk luminaries as Phil Cunningham and, well, Ivan Drever who just happens to be his dad.

Story behind the song
I am not sure how Neil would describe this song, so i won't attempt to explain it on his behalf.
Lyrics
I used to be a genius but now I'm cured Thought I was alive but I was just fooled Freeloader, you're no good for anyone Maybe it will rain today it's anybody's guess I think I'll run away and die just like the rest Freeloader, you're no good for anyone Will you tell me what I want to hear? Come closer but don't get too near I know I should have really tried to cry upon your shoulder But as time passed by I just seemed to get older And if things are different now you know I'm truly sorry I tried too hard and things fell down around me Freeloader, you're no good for anyone Will you tell me what I want to hear? Come closer but don't get too near Now we know just what we know, it isn't very much I'm not sure what I can do to try and stop the rust Freeloader you're no good to anyone Will you tell me what I want to hear? Come closer but don't get too near
