Story behind the song
The Hmongs are an ethnic group of people from Laos. Prior to the Viet war, they were mainly supporters of the democratic party. During the Viet war against the communist military government, the US recruited them as spies. They were promised security and protection for their war efforts. However, when the war ended and the communist won, the US pulled out, leaving the Hmongs defenseless. This was then the start of a genocide of their kind by the Laos military government. They fled into the mountainous regions, out of reach from civilization. Things left as such until 2004, when the Laos military took an active step in eradicating them. There were inside reports stating that there were mass killings, torture and rape by the military. This forced the people to flee further to the borders of Laos, and eventually crossing into Thailand. Now, about 8000 of the refugees are concentrated in a camp near Petchaboon. They are scheduled to be deported back to Laos due to political reasons. A lot of them fear this to the point of suicide. Some poisoned themselves by eating pesticides when they knew that they were going to be deported.
Lyrics
Biscuits and Milo (25/02/08) Verse 1 Running till no breath is left Finally a place of rest Some people say it’s protection I call it a fence Is it an offence, to flee in defence? Can 8000 mentally distressed? Women children were not spared Wounds to the heart by bullets Pre-chorus The more they know the more they cry Calling for angels from the sky In unknown language But you understand, it’s For their lives Chorus A nod and knees bent Two hands together, Asking for Nothing more Than Biscuits and Milo Reach down to them Look into their eyes You could almost hear I don’t wanna die Verse 2 The powers have agreed on This is not where they belong Send them back once and for all Deal with them out of my soil. A couple of separated Some choices have been made -d I rather forsake myself here Than to relive my fears Bridge Almost giving up this part Hope shines from the dark But all of this superficially Are temporary means to live Maybe It’s the extra dollars Maybe it’s the fear of spiders Maybe it’s the heart so very cold It’s working anymore
