Story behind the song
"Amazing Grace" and "Taps" Last week at a Native American Flute performance a young lady came up and bought an album and said she was shipping it out to Iraq. She really didn't look old enough to be in the army and going to a war zone. I told her to take care, be safe and I would play a song for her. Times are really changing and it is a brave new world we live in, but I know Republican or Democrat, for the war or against the war, Conservative or Liberal we all support our young men and women who are laying their lives on the line for us and want all of them to come back safe and sound. I was playing at the Atwood Lake POW WOW and was asked to play a song for the MIA's and POW's when they planted their flag at the Grand Entry. With honor I played Amazing Grace and Taps. When I was finished I looked out into the audience and for the first time in my life I saw a group of grown men crying. The Native American people have served our country with distinction at a higher per capita rate than any other race in the United States always as volunteers never drafted. They were not required by law to serve, because of their nation status. Recently the Code Talkers have received some recognition for their contribution. Many times when I perform I dedicate Amazing Grace and Taps to Hopi Native American woman "Lori Ann Piestewa" recently lost in battle in the Iraq war and to all veterans of all the wars. I was told this story about Amazing Grace. The Cherokee were forced to march from Tennessee to Oklahoma in the dead of winter and thousands of men women and children were lost to the freezing cold and hunger they called the "Trail of Tears". The soldiers who were guarding them told the Cherokee they couldn't sing their songs or talk among themselves in their native language. Many of the eastern Cherokee had been converted to Christianity and were given permission to sing this one song "Amazing Grace". I have played "Taps" for many a fallen warrior. love and peace Spirit john de boer We all have a song inside us it tells us who we are. Mitakuye Oyasin !!
