Paper Cats is a lover's duo. We range through folk and anti-folk to rougher electrified rock and blues; Chris plays guitars--six string, twelve string, classical acoustic, electric, you name it--and Lauren mostly sings. Some of our work is Chris's solo guitar composition, some Lauren's solo ballads, but increasingly our work is collaborative, usually with Chris writing guitar parts and Lauren writing vocal parts. We are enjoying ourselves immensely.

Story behind the song
Charlie Reed is the Chancellor of the California State University. Chris is a 12-year "temporary" faculty member at CSU Stanislaus. Lauren is an alumna of CSU Stanislaus.
Lyrics
He came all the way from Florida in 1998 To be the head of higher ed in the good great Golden State But when he came he soon found out All the work he had to do To make the system work his way he'd have to break the CSU. Yes Charlie Reed had bigger dreams when he came to run the U online classes, empty rooms we'd only need a prof or two But some folks they had tenure and some folks organized some other way to beat them would have to be devised The unions came to bargain they wanted a fair deal so Charlie tried to break them and this was his appeal: "Them faculty are lazy," he told everyone he could "They only work 10 hours a week ain't none of them no good." Well Charlie found a problem way back in 20-0-2 There was no common system but he knew just what to do "We'll make a pact with Peoplesoft" he declared one sunny day "and overruns and tech support'll make every campus pay" The faculty were fleeing and the budgets all got cut The student fees were rising and Charlie said "know whut?" "There's other ways to turn this place into my dream come true We'll maximize efficiency and pass the costs to you." "We'll toss those low-class students who don't deserve to learn into early start extended ed! We'll have surplus to burn!" Then Charlie started planning the final coup de grace "We'll outsource all the classes! That's sure to save some space!" "This job gets tougher every year! I don't get no respect From students and the faculty, but what do you expect?" "They're radicals and infidels they're all that we detest After everything I've done for them they continue to protest!" Well, what's to come of Charlie and his vision of the U? Can anybody stop him? Well, that's up to me and you! We'll fight him with the truth, We'll fight him with our power. We'll never back away from him Til the CSU is ours!
