Story behind the song
In my view, a really special and "different" kind of music evolved from internet collaboration. The innovators of this phenomenon were the developers of the Rocket Network. Alas, after 9 years, they closed their doors to the public and sold the idea to the people behind ProTools. In the heyday of Rocket, 2000-2002, their public jam sessions heralded a wealth of new music by bringing together musicians of all ages, abilities and genres. So impressed was I by the sheer imagination and quality of some of these jams, that I began to mix down a few sessions into "song format" with the intention of releasing an album of them on the internet. Sadly, more important projects started coming my way and the album was never completed. This one, which I named VOYAGER (I gave each song the name of a rocket!) was an early one, but is still my favourite. I never get tired of listening to this. It has a very relaxing feel, and brings back a lot of good memories of the people I jammed with on a regular basis throughout the night! It evolved from an idea by Lennie who began with a riff around the chord G6. It quickly became another atmospheric ballad of around 7min 20 secs. This was also much easier to mix as the sounds and arrangement remain largely unedited. In fact the majority of my time was spent experimenting with the sounds of my Logic soft synth, the ES1, until I managed to find a sound with which I was happy enough to replace my original midi flute track!
