Story behind the song
I love Noel Coward, his style and wit and most of all his songs. This is my little tribute hoplessly failing to emulate the master. (I'll bet he is spinning)!
Lyrics
STIFF UPPER LIP. Words & Music ©TonyWMusic 2003 V1 A gentleman is never sad but often melancholy Most Englishmen would deem it mad in public to be jolly It is the English way, Well bred men should not be gay So they keep it in with the help of gin and the English ladies say CHORUS Keep it up boys keep it stiff yes let it stand straight out All England does expect it and that is why they shout Keep it up men keep it hard You must not let it slip An Englishman would be quite undone He could be French or American There’s just one thing to distinguish one The English upper lip V2 The French it seems have lips that curl from drinking chardonnay Italian lips can kiss a girl in a quite romantic way And as for Eskimo’s Why kiss with lips they use their nose So an Englishman must do what he can that’s why this ditty goes CHORUS V3 Americans it must be said are wealthy and quite strong With lips that may be healthy but they say their words all wrong They always say tomaaato Quite frankly it should be tomato The Queen is sad that they speak so bad It’s potato not potaaato CHORUS
