Story behind the song
Stacy was a waitress in a bar we used to play down in Panama City Beach, Florida. She showed up to work one night with one too many bruises to explain. I sat down the next day and wrote this song in about a half hour.
Lyrics
Stacy's got a million dreams in her head,
And all she'll do is sit around and wish she were dead.
She's got the phone off the hook, and her door shut tight,
Leaves the television on all through the night.
I gotta '57 Chevy with three on a tree.
She's gone half a million miles and still running clean.
They're playing Bruce on the radio, and I'm opening the door.
Girl tonight we're gonna push it half a million more.
You say, "Only time will tell. Running away ain't never gonna help."
Well I don't know about you,
But I'm starting to lose my faith.
CHORUS:
And I can see that highway rolling miles away,
Where the sky overhead ain't just another shade of gray.
I don't know where we're going, don't care where we've been.
We're just a couple of angels, been living in sin.
But it's alright. Girl it's alright. Baby it's alright,
If you cry in your sleep.
Stacy says she really loves her old man.
He's gonna get some help as soon as he can.
She says he tells her he's sorry, that he's crying real tears.
It's the same song and dance he's been singing for years.
Stacy says that I should just look the other way.
Tomorrow morning's gonna bring a new day.
Well I've gotta .38 Special, and it might be a sin,
But I can fix it where he's never gonna touch you again.
Stacy baby won't you come along with me.
You can make me a man, and I can set your heart free.
I don't know about you,
But I'm starting to lose my faith.
(CHORUS)
