Story behind the song
Although I had played guitar and bass in a band for several years, I had never actually sang in public or self-performed any of my own songs. In 2000 I was given the opportunity to do so before several hundred people in a church service, and I was quite apprehensive. The Lord led me to Psalm 19, which inspired me to write (and subsequently perform) this song. There is a section between verses 2 & 3 where the lyrical content is "la la . .". My original intent was to use this as a placeholder for the melody, then replace it with lyrical content. On reflection I decided the "la la's" better fit the theme of the song, which is a celebration of the goodness of God.
Lyrics
Verse 1 * The heavens declare Your glory and power * Your sun moon and stars light our way * Your wind and Your rain bring new life to the ground * In You alone will I trust, my Lord, * in You alone will I trust * Verse 2 * Your word declares Your faithfulness * The cross proves the depth of Your love * Your merciful gift of Your own righteous Son * In You alone will I trust, my Lord, * in You alone will I trust…. * La La’s…..* Verse 3 * Set free by Your Spirit, my joy knows no bounds * My heart and my soul hold Your peace * I’m surrounded by grace wrapped in Your loving arms * In You alone will I trust, my Lord, * in You alone will I trust * Chorus * For Your law is so perfect, Your testimony sure * Transforming heart and soul * Your love is eternal, Your righteousness endures * More precious than the finest gold, Yes Lord, more precious than the finest gold.
