Story behind the song
Like "Out in the Rockies", Brad originally came up with the idea for this song back in the early 1990's. Brad thought the music was there, but needed better lyrics. Brad met Nashville songwriter Dave Toderian through a mutual friend and over the phone, Brad and Dave came up with the lyrics to the song. When recording this song in the studio, this song came together almost instantly with the musicians. The genius of the electric guitar slide and boogie riffs came from John Conley. Howard Duck came up with old time piano licks combining them with the clavinet bottom end to make the song work, as the song says: "He can take somethin' old and turn it into somethin' new". The drums were played by Mark Beckett and the bass by Larry Marrs. Back up singers are Pam "P.J. Ray" Gudgeon and Joie Gionatti-Murray. Interestingly, the idea for the tag ending of the song "Rock-A-Billy, Rock-A-Billy Willie" came to Brad just 2 days before he went into the studio. Seymour Duncan is famous for making the specialty wired humbuckin' guitar pick ups for the music stars and their bands. Brad actually met Seymour Duncan at Mr. Duncan's home in Santa Barbara, CA back in the early 1990's while knocking on doors selling cleaning services. Brad was born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA.
