Story behind the song
Brad was inspired to write this song when he heard the line "I Don't Know My Country Anymore" mentioned in folksinger Anne Marie Harpen's song "Walk the Streets in Anger". He thought it would be a great hook and title for a country song. Brad invited Anne to sing on this cut of this song. She is the distinctive voice you hear singing back up. Joie Gionnati-Murray is the haunting, angelic "soprano" voice you hear near the end of the song. Greg Gilmore plays mandolin. Kimberly Marrs plays fiddle.
Lyrics
From the rights our forefathers gave, to the fight for freedom today I bet Patrick (spoken) Henry (sung) is rolling over in his grave I'm holding on to yesterday, but all my dreams are slipping away Paid my dues (spoken) to Uncle Sam (sung) now there ain't nothin' left to save I don't know my country anymore And the changes I have seen I can't ignore When the leaders lose the common trust Lord knows what's in store for us I don't know my country anymore I don't know my country anymore We used to say our prayers in school, We Three Kings was really cool We used to call it (spoken) Christmas (sung) and not a Winter Holiday Now we're killin' babies 'cause love is cheap seems all God's children have fallen asleep Right here in the (spoken) Promised Land, you know we're gonna have Heaven to pay I don't know my country anymore And the changes I have seen I can't ignore When the leaders lose the common trust Lord knows what's in store for us I don't know my country anymore I don't know my country anymore I don't know my country anymore But the Constitution's still worth fightin' for And I would gladly give my life For freedom and the Bill of Rights But I don't know my country anymore God, I don't know my country anymore From the rights our forefathers gave, to the fight for freedom today
