Story behind the song
Rigoletto: Concert Fantasia on Motives from the Verdi Opera, Luigi Bassi, 1901 Carl Fischer NYC. Recorded 1950 during my senior high school years, Austin Minnesota (1950, age 18) at judged competitions. Due to the length of the piece and time restrictions for the competition, there are several cuts. Even given the cuts the performance was stopped at the middle of page 7 (9th bar). The cuts with modified cadenzas are as follows: page 1, 15th bar cadenza to page 4 andante theme. Page 5, bar 10 3rd line of cadenza cut to page 6 allegro moderato theme. Time ran out on page 7 bar 9. There were 2 ½ pages of solo remaining. The originals are direct to disk 10 inch 78s The sound is very primitive, low-fi. They were digitized and cleaned up by Bruce Norris, friend, musician and recording engineer.
I found these recordings among my parents belongings. The were made about 60 years ago (Now in 2010 I'm 78 years old, same as the recoring speed!)
