Back in 1990, a friend of mine, D. Dietrich, more or less willed the melody of this tune to me, saying she had heard it from an old Sicangu Lakota woman years back. Years later, I grafted the middle section on to it (from an unknown failed pop tune) in 2004, years after D. had passed away. This is the only tune we ever wrote together.
