Story behind the song
The composition is in Russian. A rough translation of the poem is below:
Lyrics
Mikhail Lermontov "Repentance" Why reproach your fate with rebellious discontent? It was good to you, you created your own suffering. Mindless, you had a clean, honest soul, Uninfected by evil, And that treasure you lost. You dared to engender the flames in first love, And then were not able to love further, Having obtained this pathetic aim. You disdain everything; between people You stand, as an oak in the desert country, And the quiet tears of innocent love Could not move your soul. God does not give us happiness twice, replacing happiness for passion; Without consolation, torment, Your life is as a child. On the beautiful mouth of deception You will meet her kisses, Her lips the first subject before you hourly. O, beg for her grace, Fall, fall to her feet, That, if she rejects reconciliation, You have prepared to live in hell. Though you love more, Tenderness does not return, The strength of love that has been first lost Will never be replaced. (1830)
